Investing in the future of our forests

Rescuing at-risk fire-effects data from British Columbia's forests and turning it into answers land managers can use.

DB2020 origins

The recent extreme fires in British Columbia, Canada, coupled with our awareness that valuable data on the effects of fire on forest ecosystems are at risk of being lost, inspired us to undertake the Burning Questions Project in the fall of 2017. Our team included Evelyn Hamilton (lead), Julia Chandler, Sybille Haeussler and Reg Newman. Funding was provided by the Forest Enhancement Society of British Columbia (FESBC) and the BC Ministry of Forests Lands and Natural Resource Operations.

Our goals were to:

  1. identify key information needs by talking with decision makers;
  2. collect available data sets;
  3. analyze the gathered data to answer key questions; and
  4. extend our findings back to decision makers.
